By now, I’ve read the various articles on “OPM being dead”. Different points of view and comments from all sides. Had time to think about it, and figured I’d put my two cents in.
My take? Having been with radio for the past 16 years, OPM is struggling, but how can it be labeled dead when Original Pilipino Music is still being made? When we have musicians coming out of the woodwork even without the promise of money? Music is made, simply because inspiration is there. Our musicians continue because it’s their passion. Music comes out their pores. The downside, sometimes, it doesn’t equate to riches. The upside, the music will touch somebody out there. That for me equates to a pulse that’s still going strong, not a flatline.
I’ve had the honor and pleasure to be witness first hand to incredible talent, coming from both established and new artists in the industry. Some have to release covers just to make everybody happy or maybe get their foot in the door, but that doesn’t mean there’s less integrity. Sure people are always quick to judge. Myself included. “Eww.. another cover.” But everybody needs to make money. How do you survive? How do you continue to make music if you can’t feed yourself? So you reconcile with that part of yourself and come to a compromise. That’s the real world. There are a million and one things to be said on this topic. Everybody will have their own valid point.
But in my humble opinion, OPM is having a hard time but it perseveres, it always will. Life and everything in it is like a rollercoaster, there are the highs and the lows and the in between. Everything is always in flux. Things will get better. OPM music continues because we have crazy-talented people who won’t let it die.
